Petition of Citizens of the Republic of Liberia To Harry Varney Gboto-Nambi Sherman To Contest The Position Of President of the Republic of Liberia in The October, 2005 Presidential and Legislative Elections
We, citizens of the Republic of Liberia from the fifteen (15) Political sub-divisions, either normally resident or internally displaced in the County of Montserrado, Republic aforesaid.
Acknowledging the blessings of the Almighty God for our existence as a body politic and continuously relying on his divine grace and mercy for our survival as a people after fourteen (14) years of brutal and barbaric civil wars, which destroyed thousands and thousands of lives and reduced our common patrimony to a state of absolute poverty and degradation;
Being committed to the premise that those persons who, whether directly or indirectly, plunged our country into the circle of civil wars during these past fifteen (15) years, looted our resources for their personal aggrandizement and comfort, and caused our country to become a failed and pariah state in the community of nations, should not assume the highest political office of this land;
Knowing your adherence to the principles of justice for all peoples, irrespective of ethnicity, creed or religion, to the rule of law as the for human behavior, to decentralization of our unitary system of government with its vertical management precepts, and to the transformation of our country in order to bring it to the level of the emerging democracies of the 21st Century; and being fully cognizant that the future of our country and the transformation of our land and its people depend on the kind of leadership that is elected at the October, 2005 presidential and general elections ? a leadership that will subscribe and adhere to principles and philosophies which you have subscribed and adhere to throughout your life and career;
Do hereby, on this the anniversary of the birth of the first President of our Republic and in this historic edifice (the City Hall for the capital city of our country), implore, request and plead wit you to contest in the October, 2005 Presidential and Legislative elections for the highest political office of our land ?President of the Republic of Liberia.
Ours is a country that is awash in the blood of our people through years and years of violence; ours is a country of highly traumatized young men and women ? victims of every imaginable abuse and misuse by dictators and evil people; ours is a country with very, very low literacy rate, a country which does not provide to its people basic services, such as health, clean drinking water, electric power, etc; ours is a country whose infrastructures have been laid to waste, and whose financial and economic systems and processes have been dislocated; ours is a resource-rich country, but whose people suffer in absolute poverty and misery; ours is a country, which needs a courageous, bold, farsighted, committed, compassionate and caring leader to transform our systems and put in place the new processes to lead us to the permanent peace that has eluded us for so many years, to take us to the level of sustainable and balanced ecom0mic development and prosperity that is deserving for us all, and to
ensure that true justice and the rule of law will prevail all over this land.
Ours is a county that needs and requires a leader, not a ruler; ours is a country that needs and requires a leadership which was never involved in our protracted civil conflicts and yet lived and experienced the agony, deprivation and difficulties of these past fifteen (15) years; ours is a country that needs and requires a leadership with whom all Liberians, even those who participated in the civil conflicts will be comfortable to live with in Liberia, a leadership with the capacity and the character to really and truly reconcile us, unite and integrate us; ours is a country that needs a leadership that recognizes our schisms and differences, commits itself to eradicating those schisms and differences, and dedicates itself to the welfare of all our peoples, not his cronies, not his tribal or ethnic group.
Ours is a country in dire need of a leadership with the capacity and the commitment to enlist with it, as a team, men and women of goodwill, honor, integrity, credibility and professional qualifications and experience to take on the Herculean, yet accomplishable tasks of rebuilding and transforming our country and directing our energies and resources for the betterment of our people.
Harry Varney Gboto-Nambi Sherman, a true and patriotic ?son of the soil?, ours is a country which needs you as its President, for you possess the character and the qualifications, have had the experience, and, over many years, exhibited your commitment and dedication to the values and principles enumerated above. With you, as our President, and with a team of like-minded Liberians working with you, our common patrimony will overcome its present status of extreme poverty and degradation;, and achieve permanent peace and prosperity, sustained and balance economic development and good governance will be experienced by our country and enjoyed by al our people.
